Recently Maxie’s had the honor of taking part in an effective and rewarding program sponsored by the charity foundation Share Our Strength. This 6-week program is called Operation Front Line, and was held at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center. It is designed to bring local professionals to the community, sharing their skills with community members and, in this case, children. This program’s goal is to give them valuable life experience and knowledge, therefore allowing for personal achievement and growth, and the chance to improve the quality of their own lives.

Of course at Maxie’s, our strength is our food, and we firmly believe in food as a major component of life’s quality. Owner Chick Evans, with Chloe Greenhalgh, one of our outstanding cooks, worked with children ages 9-11 hands-on, teaching such important issues as nutrition, the food pyramid, and food safety, as well as demonstrating and teaching basic cooking techniques and food production.

The children learned to cook basic dishes such as guacamole, salsa, and pizza bread, and how to do it with or without the help of an adult. This promotes confidence, understanding of food value and the necessity of good nutrition. But mostly they just had fun, as did Chick and Chloe. Chick calls the experience "very rewarding", and is eager to get other staff, such as Chef de Cuisine Bill Mann and Prep Chef Jeff Richardson involved in future programs, which include adult classes focusing on food cost management and maximum yield on an individual or family budget.

Maxie’s has always understood the value of community involvement; we believe it is vital to the development of the community. Share Our Strength’s Operation Front Line is a perfect venue for us to make a difference in the collective quality of life in Ithaca, and it was an honor to take part in it.
